Natural silk - what to expect

Natural silk behaves differently from synthetic plastic floss. It can occasionally fray or snap in very tight spaces, so ease it gently between close teeth using a slow side-to-side motion.

Our silk floss is:

Frequently asked questions

Is your silk floss PFAS-free?

Yes. Independent laboratory testing confirms our silk floss is PFAS-free and 100% bio-based.

Is silk floss biodegradable or compostable?

Our floss is made from natural silk and is plastic-free, but we don’t hold a compostability certification, so we don’t make a certified compostable claim.

Is silk floss made from animals?

Yes. Silk is a natural animal fibre produced by silkworms. We think it’s important to be clear about that before you choose it.

Is this Peace Silk or Ahimsa Silk?

No. We don’t describe our silk as “Peace” or “Ahimsa” silk.

Those terms generally refer to silk collected after the moth has emerged from the cocoon, but there is no universal independent certification that verifies the claim. Moth emergence also breaks the cocoon’s continuous silk filament into shorter fibres, which can affect the strength of the resulting silk.

There are also ongoing questions about whether the process eliminates animal-welfare concerns altogether, particularly what happens to the moths and excess offspring after emergence. For those reasons, we prefer simply to tell you exactly what our floss is made from rather than make a “cruelty-free” silk claim.

Can silk floss break in tight teeth?

It can. Natural silk behaves differently from synthetic floss and may occasionally fray or snap in very tight contacts. Ease it in gently with a slow side-to-side motion rather than forcing it between the teeth. If it doesn't work for you, send it back for a full refund.
