One honest note: natural silk behaves differently from synthetic floss. In very tight contacts it can occasionally fray or snap, and there can be some natural variation between batches. If you have very tight spaces we recommend our silk floss with beeswax, the thinnest, smoothest, strongest silk floss we can make.

What is silk floss and how is it different from regular floss?

Silk floss is dental floss made from natural silk fibres rather than synthetic fibres such as nylon or PTFE. Our floss is made from mulberry silk, with either a candelilla wax or beeswax coating and mint essential oil. It contains no plastic.

Is this Peace Silk or Ahimsa Silk?

No. We don’t describe our silk as “Peace” or “Ahimsa” silk. Those terms generally refer to silk collected after the moth has emerged from the cocoon, but there is no universal independent certification that verifies the claim. Allowing the moth to emerge also breaks the cocoon’s continuous silk filament into shorter fibres, which can produce a weaker silk thread.

There are also questions about whether the process removes animal-welfare concerns altogether, including what happens to the moths and excess offspring after emergence. For those reasons, we prefer to tell customers exactly what our floss is made from rather than make a “cruelty-free silk” claim.

Is silk floss suitable for vegans?

No. The floss itself is made from silk, which is animal-derived, so is not vegan.

What does PFAS-free mean for dental floss?

PFAS are a large group of synthetic chemicals often called “forever chemicals” because many are highly persistent in the environment.

Some conventional dental flosses have used PFAS-containing materials or coatings to help the floss glide between teeth, and independent consumer testing has identified PFAS-related fluorine in some mainstream floss products.

Our silk floss has been independently laboratory tested and confirmed PFAS-free. Instead, we use natural wax coatings - candelilla wax or beeswax - to help the floss glide between teeth.
