**heads contain an industrially compostable bio-plastic insert for easy fitting. The Turtle Tribe purchases plastic offsets exceeding the plastic contents of our products, so more plastic is removed from the environment than we sell (which is very little), plus through our membership of 1% for the Planet, a portion of every sale funds ocean conservation projects around Australia.
PLEASE NOTE - our bamboo electric toothbrush heads are compatible with The Turtle Tribe electric toothbrushes. They are NOT compatible with Oral B electric toothbrushes.
Plastic toothbrushes are a key part of the plastic waste problem.
Over 3 billion toothbrushes are thrown away globally every year, and inevitably, some end up in waterways and oceans.
Every toothbrush you've ever used is still in the world somewhere. We have to change. We have to use, and throw away, less plastic.
The Turtle Tribe Bamboo Electric Toothbrush uses replaceable heads carved from bamboo. Each head takes around six months to decompose while a plastic one takes hundreds of years to break up into toxic micro and nano-plastics.
The average person uses 300 toothbrush heads in their lifetime. Make sure yours are eco-friendly!
We would like to stress that, while the heads are made of bamboo, the Bamboo Electric Toothbrush base is made of plastic and metal components as per safety standards and waterproof requirements.
We also sell electric toothbrushes.
How about the nylon bristles?
Some customers have asked about nylon toothbrush bristles and microplastics, so we wanted to share a clear and balanced summary of the science.
Like many everyday materials, nylon bristles can gradually wear over time. But measuring particles released during simulated brushing is not the same as measuring what is actually swallowed. During normal brushing, most foam and debris is spat out and rinsed away, which likely reduces real-world ingestion substantially.
A recent 2025 study found some toothbrushes released particles during testing, but the same researchers concluded oral care products did not directly increase overall health risks associated with microplastic exposure.
Current evidence suggests everyday exposure to plastics is influenced more by sources such as food packaging, bottled water, household dust, and synthetic textiles than by your toothbrush alone.
We believe customers should be free to choose what suits them best. Some prefer nylon bristles for consistency, durability, and hygiene. Others prefer a natural alternative to reduce synthetic materials. We respect both views, which is why we offer both synthetic and natural bristled bamboo electric toothbrush heads.
Our view is simple: informed choice matters more than scare tactics.
If you choose nylon bristles: brush gently, rinse well, let your brush dry between uses, and replace every 2–3 months.
We now also offer ethically-sourced horse hair bristles, from horse-tail hair harvested during normal grooming and trimming of live animals. With these heads, use gentle pressure, rinse thoroughly, store upright in a dry ventilated area, allow to fully dry, and replace every 5–8 weeks or when worn.
